WeWork - Tech Ecosystem

While researching information in regards to tech ecosystems, an article I found interesting was on the emergence of transforming office spaces. This article focused on the company WeWork, which is a New-York based coworking startup that “provides shared workspaces for startups, small businesses, freelancers and entrepreneurs, managing over 10 million square feet of office space around the world.” (Scipioni, 2017). This article How WeWork Enterprise Is Transforming The Way Large Businesses Rent Office Spaces, provides insight on the transformation companies are doing to their office spaces within a technological world. Companies are now moving to coworking spaces where that are able to connect with people from their business or or companies. Shared offices spaces allow people to not only be within a shared environment but be apart of a community. WeWork sets out to be a space for companies and individuals to be able to work and connect with one another. It sets out to allow for connections of “tens of thousands of creators around the world” (Isaac, 2018). Wework is able to do 5 things other companies are not able to; 1) recruit and retain talent; 2)Drive individual motivation; 3) Monitor industry; 4) Harness collaboration opportunities; 5) Cost saving, flexibility and speed delivery. In doing so, it enhances the everyday experience of the modern worker. (Isaac, 2018)
WeWork provides connections to the concept of the “projective city” by Boltanski and Chiapello within the course. This is because it provides an opportunity for individuals to constantly create connections for current or future projects. In doing so, WeWork is able to propel the individual into the next sector of their career or for a business the next project they are going to be focusing on. In a globally connected world with quick changing technological development, creating constant connections provides innovation and adaptability in a quick changing tech environment.

  1. I think the use of shared working spaces is a great opportunity for small businesses or innovative people to thrive in. I had never considered some of the 5 benefits that you outlined, and I think it just further proves the opportunities for success within this new business model.

Co-Working spaces are definitely a feature of the projective city and allow for the concept of the projective city to thrive as like-minded people can work collaboratively in order to thrive in their individual goals.

I also like your note about the benefits of community that co-working spaces provide. Communities are a major aspect of the tech, artistic and entrepreneurial communities. Without the development of these communities, the growth opportunities would be limited as much of the innovation that occurs in these environments is collaborative.
